Are you having trouble sleeping? Do you have sleep issues and suffer from insomnia? Does it take you ages to fall asleep or do you wake up in the early hours and can’t get back to sleep?

Sleep is such an important part of our lives. Medical experts claim that a healthy adult needs between 6 and 8 hours of sleep a night to continue to function at an optimum level. When we sleep, our body tissues rejuvenate. Without enough sleep, we can become severely agitated and if the condition continues, this could become serious as it can lead to problems functioning during the day. We become irritable and prolonged suffering from insomnia can lead to obesity, stress, high blood pressure, strokes, or heart disease. How much sleep we need will vary from person to person.

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a condition where you have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning (even though you have had the opportunity to sleep).

It is estimated that a third of people in the UK suffer from insomnia at some point in their lives and this can come in episodes.

Acute insomnia is a brief period of sleeplessness usually occurring under certain circumstances, for example having an exam or presentation the next day.

Chronic insomnia occurs when sleep is disrupted for at least 3 nights per week and lasts 3 months or more. Chronic insomnia is more likely to be linked to changes in the environment.

Symptoms of Poor Sleep

Symptoms can include difficulty falling asleep, waking up in the night, waking in the early hours and feeling irritable and tired the next day while having difficulty functioning, especially when it comes to tasks such as driving.

How can Hypnotherapy & Counselling help with insomnia and sleep issues?

CAUSES OF SLEEP DISTURBANCES:

Stress

Stress can cause acute insomnia where the sufferer is worried about something and does not sleep properly. This can escalate and the problem is compounded as they then begin to worry and stress about not being able to get to sleep. Therefore the sleep problem can persist even if the original stressful event has passed.

Anxiety, worry and depression

These, like stress, can all be contributing factors to disrupting sleep patterns.

There can also be causes of insomnia which relate to physical pain or discomfort or habitual reasons in that the pattern of disrupted sleep has become so ingrained it has become the norm.
