Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is a serious mental health condition that can develop in those who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as sexual or physical assault, serious accidents, natural disasters, combat exposure, or any other life-threatening event. PTSD is typically diagnosed by a mental health professional.

Those suffering from PTSD often re-experience the traumatic event through flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts. They often avoid situations or activities which bring back memories of the trauma. They suffer from negative changes in their thoughts and their mood, often including some feelings of guilt, shame, or perhaps hopelessness. They may find that they avoid certain places or situations, which remind them of the trauma and feel emotionally numb or detached. Those suffering from PTSD can become hyper-vigilant, meaning they can be easily startled, feel irritable or angry or may have trouble sleeping we're concentrating. These debilitating symptoms can significantly impair their ability to function in daily life, negatively impacting their relationships, work, social lives and overall quality of life.  They can go on to develop unhealthy, unwanted coping mechanisms.

It is possible to treat PTSD, and this could involve medication, therapy or often a combination of both. Some common therapies used to treat PTSD include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and eye-movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR). Your therapist will be able to discuss which treatment would suit your symptoms best.

While PTSD can be a challenging condition to live with, it is essential that you seek help if you are experiencing the symptoms of PTSD. With proper treatment and support, those suffering from PTSD are able to recover, manage their symptoms comfortably and go on to lead fulfilling lives.
