Help with tinnitus using hypnosis and hypnotherapy

Ear pressure causing sound in ears. High-pitched ringing in the ears. Occasional or infrequent ringing in ears.

Whilst the cause of tinnitus is unknown, there are many factors associated with it. These factors include anxiety, emotional tension and fatigue. Symptoms vary greatly according to the individual. Some suffer noise in only one ear, some in both. For some, it is a high-pitched noise whilst for others, it can be a ringing noise.

Tinnitus affects men and women equally and can be associated with many disorders of the ear. Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the head when no outside sound is present. It can take the form of ringing, hissing, whistling, clicking, roaring, whooshing or chirping and can exist with or without hearing loss.

One-third of adults report experiencing tinnitus at some time in their lives and almost everyone has experienced brief periods of mild ringing or other sounds in the ear. Around one in 200 hundred people have tinnitus symptoms so badly that it affects their ability to lead a normal life. Tinnitus is not a disease but it is a symptom common to many problems, some of which are psychological.

Often the cause of tinnitus will remain a mystery, but one of the conditions linked to the appearance or disappearance of tinnitus is stress. The stress can be physical, emotional or psychological. One thing is certain - Tinnitus is not imaginary.

Often sufferers find their symptoms worsen at night. During the day the sufferer is often distracted by sounds and activities which make the tinnitus less obvious, but at night, when it is quiet the tinnitus often seems louder and more constant.

As tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying cause, the most important step is to find and treat the underlying cause. Hypnotherapy is a treatment that has been found to be very effective for many sufferers.

Whilst any underlying disorder such as an ear infection or acoustic neuroma must be treated appropriately, many people with tinnitus have a psychological cause for their symptoms and are encouraged to concentrate on other things or not to listen for their tinnitus and hypnosis can be a great help in this. The psychological attitude the sufferer has towards their tinnitus is crucial and a positive attitude tends to make the symptoms more manageable. Again, hypnosis can prove invaluable in assisting sufferers to create a positive attitude to coping with their symptoms.

Hypnotherapy has proven as effective for tinnitus sufferers as anti-anxiety medications or Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.

Tinnitus is closely tied to negative emotions such as stress, fear, anxiety, frustration, anger and depression. Negative emotions come from the subconscious mind. All emotions originate in the subconscious mind. In order to relieve or remove suffering from tinnitus, we work with the subconscious mind.

The effects of tinnitus

Negative emotions set off a fight-or-flight response generated by your unconscious mind and autonomic nervous system. Your heart speeds up, blood pressure rises, palms get sweaty, breathing increases and blood rushes to your large muscles in preparation to either run away or put up a fight. When the sufferer first recognises the onset of tinnitus, they often feel fear or panic. What’s wrong with my ears, my head? Am I going mad? Will this noise ever stop? The sound fills the sufferer with fear, anxiety or outright terror. Sound of tinnitus + fear = conscious awareness the sufferer cannot ignore.

It becomes possible to ignore that sound only when we remove the associated fear, anxiety, frustration and so on. The sufferer fears what they don’t know, don’t understand or can’t control.

The accepted medical definition of hypnosis is ‘An altered state of consciousness in which the conscious mind is temporarily bypassed so that the subconscious mind becomes highly receptive to selective, positive suggestions.’

Hypnotherapy deals directly with the subconscious mind, memory, emotions and imagination. Negative emotions of anxiety, fear, frustration and so on are brought into the conscious mind in response to thoughts, memories or events (the events can be real or imagined). Negative emotions are nearly always associated with experiences that were frightening in some way. When these emotions are brought up in response to the noise of tinnitus, they bring with them associated memories, and this increases the fear of tinnitus symptoms. This fear becomes overwhelming.

During hypnosis, a client’s subconscious mind can revisit a time immediately before the onset of their tinnitus, and he or she will often be completely free of tinnitus while there. They are then able to move forward in time to when their tinnitus began and we can easily identify and deal with whatever negative emotions arise thus seeing the emotions for what they truly represent.
